When Egyptian people die, they are mummified and put in a tomb. This is a picture of a tomb. The tomb has all their precious belongings such as gold, valuable china, etc. This process takes a long time, up to 75 days. They have to do certain things to the body before they can put it in a tomb. This is a very religious ceremony. They believe if you mummify the body they will relive their life in the underworld. It is especially important for kings to be mummified so they can rule in the underworld. A king's tomb needs to be highly protected so tomb raiders can't break in and steal the gold. Sometimes they put the kings' tombs under pyramids. For a regular peasant they are just buried under the ground in a plain old spot. This is why they felt it nessesary to do the mumification process.
